After logging on to Preset and starting your journey, you will encounter a number of different screens designed to help you organize, manage, and create robust visualizations.

In this Getting Started with Preset guide, we will explore the four most common interfaces that you will navigate as you familiarize yourself with Preset.

These include:

  • Workspace Screen
  • Home Page
  • Dashboard Screen
  • Explore View

Let's explore each of these screens in more detail.

Workspace Screen

Workspace Screen

A workspace is a grouping of information that shares a common purpose. A workspace can be created for any reason — some potential usages include:

  • A project.
  • Business units or departments.
  • A software development lifecycle stage (e.g., testing, development, etc.).

For example, in this Getting Started guide, we will use data from the Covid-19 pandemic to create visualizations. Potential workspace names for this scenario could be "Coronavirus Visualizations," "Covid-19 Charts," etc.

Home Page

The Home Page organizes all of the most commonly-used actions in a singular interface so that you can dive into using Preset with minimal need for navigation. Content areas are organized into four different panels:

  • Recents Panel
  • Dashboards Panel
  • Saved Queries Panel
  • Charts Panel

Dashboard Screen

Dashboard View

When you select a dashboard from the Home Page, you'll be taken to its Dashboard screen.

A dashboard is a collection of interactive visualizations that are typically related to each other. For example, the dashboard in the image above contains visualizations based on World Bank data... so there is a table listing the most populated countries, a line chart showing population growth rate, a world map showing rural population percentages, and so on.

Preset dashboards enable you to relate and convey data in a visually appealing way. In this Getting Started with Preset guide, we will create multiple visualizations and then put them all together in our own dashboard.

Speaking of visualizations, let's have a look at where the magic happens.

Explore View


The Explore View screen is used to create a visualization of your data. Preset offers a robust selection of different visualizations and data selection features that empower you to convey your information in different ways.

Some of our most popular visualizations—many of which we'll be exploring in this Getting Started guide—include:

  • Time Series: Line charts, time-series bar charts, and other visualizations that show values over time.
  • Composition: Bar charts, pie charts, word clouds, and other visualizations that show values for a specific field.
  • Distribution: Area charts, histograms, box plots, and other visualizations that show the distribution of data across one or more fields.
  • Relationship: Pivot tables, heat maps, bubble charts, and other visualizations that show the relationship of data between two or more variables.
  • Geospatial: deck.gl visualizations (e.g., polygons, hexagons, scatterplots, etc.), mapboxes, and other visualizations that show geographically-derived data.
